Privacy and Being Tracked

These days, it's hard to do anything on the web without being tracked. Data is gathered to deliver content recommendations, deliver advertisements, and to sell to product marketing companies. How bad are these practices? What choice to we have as consumers to opt out of tracking? How are we responsible as designers, developers, and business strategists to create the world we want, and not implement a world that we don't. Brett Gaylord recently released a documentary about online tracking, raising questions about what it's doing to our society and our freedoms.
